25 years of insight into management

Friday 20 July 2012

Setting goals, solving problems, motivating people, managing time, negotiating and persuading, presenting ideas and harnessing creativity – in short ‘getting things done’.

These are the essential ingredients of management in all walks of life, and Lower Sixth students have the opportunity to develop these key skills at GSAL’s annual Insight into Management course.

Now in its 25th year, the course has stood the test of time. During the four day residential course at Leeds Trinity University College in July, 62 students enjoyed the customary hands-on mix of business simulation games, workshops on key business skills, and staging a sales exhibition. Not just for business and economics students, the course provides a valuable personal development opportunity for students whatever their academic and career interests, and the chance to enjoy a taste of independent living on campus.

Although teachers from GSAL are on hand, the course is delivered by experienced professionals from a variety of companies including Deloitte, McKinsey & Company and the digital marketing agency Bolser. They are supported by a team of Young Managers who, just starting out on their working lives build a ready rapport with the students.

Head of Economic Studies Chris Law said: “It was a real pleasure to be working with a group of students who brought enjoyment and complete commitment to every element of the programme. Moreover we were blessed with Young Managers who were thoughtful, talented and keen to bring out the best in their groups.”

Student Leo Brosh said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the course, which has allowed me to expand my understanding of business, interact with my peers and learn new skills. I’d definitely recommend it.”

Fellow student Leah Weerasinghe added: “As someone who is usually more arts based, it’s been eye-opening how much I’ve learnt and enjoyed this experience.”

It’s not only the students that benefit from the week’s activities. As one of the Young Managers commented: “I really enjoyed myself and learnt far beyond what I expected. The course content was expert, dynamic and straightforward and the students are a credit to GSAL.”
