Tuesday 29 March 2022

Award-winning actress Amara Okereke (GSAL15) is playing the role of Eliza Doolittle in the West End production of My Fair Lady.

Since leaving GSAL in 2015, Amara has enjoyed a glittering showbusiness career and starred in a series of top roles on the London stage. Now she will star as Eliza Doolittle alongside Dame Vanessa Redgrave as Mrs Higgins when the new production of the classic musical opens at the London Coliseum in May.

Amara was awarded the Stage Debut Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Cosette in Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre. She also won a Yorkshire Young Achievers Award in 2018 after making history as the first black actress for her role in the musical.

Amara trained with the National Youth Music Theatre and graduated from Arts Educational Schools, London in 2018.

The Leeds actress was last seen playing Wendla in the acclaimed production of Spring Awakening at the Almeida Theatre in December 2021. Other credits include Polly in The Boyfriend at the Menier Chocolate Factory; Laurie in Oklahoma! at Chichester Festival Theatre and Maria in West Side Story at Manchester Warehouse.

She also appeared in the BBC/Netflix drama Red Rose.

Amara is featured on the front cover of Tatler’s May issue.
