GSAL on award shortlist after 11 new bursaries created

Thursday 25 July 2019

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) is in the running for a prestigious accolade in an awards scheme celebrating the success of independent schools and their students.

Independent Schools of the Year 2019 is an awards scheme designed by Independent School Parent magazine. The 20 categories reflect the diversity of today’s independent schools and their contribution to local communities and wider society.

GSAL is shortlisted in the category The Marketing Award for Effective Brand Communication, in recognition of a campaign during the school’s 10th birthday celebrations in 2018. Last year marked a decade since the co-educational school’s creation through the merger of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High School.

The birthday campaign’s objectives were twofold – widening access to GSAL by creating 10 ‘birthday bursaries’, one for each year of the school, and increasing stakeholder engagement through a series of events, PR initiatives and awards for notable alumni, all supported by special birthday branding.

The birthday bursary campaign exceeded all expectations, with over £900K being raised. This will provide 11 new means-tested bursaries to enable pupils from families with modest incomes to join GSAL in Year 7 or Sixth Form.

Sue Woodroofe, Principal, said: “These new bursaries are a birthday present that will keep on giving, opening up the life chances of young people from some of the most deprived areas of Leeds.

“For a pupil ready to grasp the opportunity and make the most of what an independent education has to offer, a bursary to attend GSAL can be transformational. We are immensely grateful to our alumni, parents and staff for their generosity.”

Meanwhile, during the year over 1,000 alumni and other stakeholders enjoyed birthday events, while pupils from nursery to sixth form took part in creative projects that will permanently enrich the school environment.

The awards will be decided by a panel of judges including school leaders and representatives of the independent sector’s professional associations. The winners will be announced in October. Visit our admissions pages for details of bursary funding and how to apply.
