Howzat! U13 eleven to represent the north in national semi-finals

Monday 28 May 2012

The U13 cricket team of the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) have defeated Sedbergh by five wickets in the northern final of the David English Bunbury Cup, earning a place in the national semi-final.

In a rain interrupted match played away at Sedbergh, the home side elected to bat but GSAL’s excellent fielding and tight bowling reduced the home side to 120 all out in the 33rd over.

GSAL’s Jack McGahan and Thomas Townsend opened the bowling, with Oliver Robinson keeping up the pressure from behind the stumps. All the team’s bowlers were solid in support – Captain Abhishek Menon (pictured bowling), Josh Dracup, Tom Burton, Sam Winter and Will Piper.

Tom Burton and Oliver Robinson opened the GSAL batting and with the threat of rain, their first target was to pass Sedbergh’s ten over score of 31. They did this with consummate ease, reaching 53 off 13 overs before the heavens opened.

After an hour’s rain break the humidity made batting much more difficult and the run rate slowed. Tom was given out LBW when he reached 22 and Oliver Robinson was caught on 36. However, GSAL’s strength and depth was clearly on display and Jack McGahan and Abhishek Menon steered the team home to a fine victory at 123-5 off 33.4 overs.

Paul Rushworth, teacher in charge of the GSAL team, said, “The cricket was excellent, but what pleased me the most were the positive comments from the neutral umpires about the way our boys conducted themselves on and off the field – they did us proud.”

Steve Dunn, Head of Cricket at GSAL, said, “It was a comprehensive victory by a team with all round strengths and capabilities.”

GSAL will now progress to a national semi-final against the winners of the Midlands group.
