New heads have wellbeing at heart

Thursday 23 June 2022

The new student leadership team has been appointed at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), with the four new heads of school announcing plans to enhance student wellbeing.

Year 12 students, Jevic, Jess, Zoe and Henry were announced as the new heads following a rigorous selection process. Each student had to earn a nomination, write a manifesto on what they could bring to the role and secure the votes from Year 12 students, as well as staff. They were then shortlisted for a final interview with the Principal and other members of the senior leadership team.

One of their ideas for the new academic year is to make further improvements to the well-being mentoring system to make it easier for younger students to access support. GSAL’s school well-being mentoring scheme trains Year 12 students to support younger students.

Jess,17, said: “We’d like to introduce the pairing up of sixth formers with specific form groups further down the school so they see the same people each week which will better support them if they are struggling a bit with the workload or friendships.”

The heads are part of a wider student leadership team, which includes the house captains, prefects, faculty leaders and faith leaders, who all work together and liaise between staff and students. Jevic, 17, who joined the school in Year 12 from Mount St Mary’s Catholic High School in Leeds, already has leadership experience. He was a deputy head at his previous school and is also a Christian faith leader at GSAL.

He thinks his appointment as head of school could encourage other new joiners to take part too. “Maybe I could give them advice on how to approach it. It’s easier for someone who has been here for five years to show they have the skills, but if you’ve only been here for six months it’s a bit harder. You have to get involved in as much as you can, which also helps you make new friends too. I think I can be a role model for new students who come in,” he said.
