New student leadership team finally take up the reins!

Friday 25 September 2020

Under normal circumstances, the new student leadership team take over from the previous team when they go on A-level study leave, but this year the students had to arrange a virtual handover.

Faced with the new challenges this brought, the incoming leadership team of Ben Wheatcroft, Miriam Solomon, Hannah Knowles and Jonathan Middleton got busy arranging online chats with each other as well as the retiring team, which gave them confidence and direction when they took up their roles for real earlier this month.

As well as being important role models to all students, their responsibilities include representing the school at events and facilitating good communication between staff and students. They head up a sixth form team of school prefects, faith leaders, faculty leaders and house captains.

Jonathan, attended Temple Moor High School before joining GSAL’s sixth form, and is the first student to be appointed to the leadership team after such a short time at the school, but he got involved in as much as possible from his very first day. He says, “I think that when you come to a school like GSAL you have to grab the opportunities that are offered to you.”

Miriam, joined in Y7 from St Peter’s Church of England Primary School. She first became interested in being part of the leadership team in Y10 when she joined UPSoc, GSAL’s equality and diversity group. She wants to become a leader and role model to enhance and promote diversity within the school.

Ben, who had always aspired to be head boy since joining GSAL’s primary school is looking forward to the opportunity to lead by example and to help bring about changes to make GSAL the best it can be.

Hannah, a keen hockey-player, who was previously at Talbot Primary School before joining GSAL’s senior school, has similar views. She says, “Since coming to GSAL I have been involved in a whole host of activities like drama and sport. I want to encourage other students to make the most of everything that the school offers.”

As a group, they are all good friends so are looking forward to working together in their new roles. Jonathan added, “We are a good strong team. We all have different strengths and we bounce off each other. We are looking forward to the year ahead.”
