Olympic swimming hopeful helps Rose Court pupils Get Set for London 2012

Friday 4 May 2012

British swimmer and Olympic hopeful Sophie Taylor, a Year 11 pupil at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), has welcomed the youngest children in the school into London 2012’s Get Set Network.

Sophie visited GSAL’s nursery and pre-prep school Rose Court to present the children with their Get Set plaque and certificate. The Get Set award is issued by The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), in recognition of a school’s commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

16 year old Sophie, from Harrogate, earned the chance of selection for Team GB with an outstanding performance at the British Gas National Swimming Championships, taking 4th place in her specialist event, the 100m breaststroke.

She said, “It was a great surprise to get the time I needed to qualify for Team GB selection, I had been ill and entered the event without any great expectations. I have to win at the National Championships in Sheffield in June to be sure of my place on the team.”

Rose Court’s Deputy Head Roz Wallen applied to LOCOG for the Get Set award. She said, “London 2012 will provide the children at Rose Court with exciting opportunities to enrich their learning, a perhaps once in a lifetime opportunity to study the Games and reflect upon their values.”

“It is very special for us to have Sophie to present the award and meet the children. Seeing the dedication of sportspeople like Sophie and their determination to succeed will motivate the children to achieve their personal best in every aspect of their lives.”

Rose Court has an exciting programme of cross-curricular activities planned starting in June, spanning a four week period during which the Olympic Torch relay will reach Leeds. The Games will be woven into every area of the curriculum, from records of achievement in PE and a special sports day, to studies of competing nations in Geography, and in creative activities from designing board games and comics to producing a musical on the theme of the Games. The Get Set Team declared it was “extremely impressed with the work that has already been done and that you have planned for the future.”
