Beyond the classroom

Exploring the wider world

Our co-curricular programme encourages students to explore a love of learning beyond the classroom. It sparks their imagination, builds skills for life and develops their emotional intelligence.

Outdoor Learning

Our outdoor learning programme provides opportunities to take on new challenges, both within our extensive school grounds – which stretch to nearly 140 acres – and on trips and expeditions further afield.

In Years 7 and 9 each form group spends three days together trying out activities such as abseiling, kayaking, orienteering, raft building and high and low ropes courses. Working together on new challenges builds their confidence and team skills.

Trips and tours

Students have many opportunities to learn from different cultures. Our modern languages department has a programme of visits and exchanges, including to the Rhineland area of Germany, Vitoria in the Basque country and Solesmes in France. Our history students visit the battlefields of northern France and our design and technology department took students to Singapore.

Recent sports tours have included Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Portugal and the school runs a ski trip to a European destination each year. The Senior School choir tours regularly, and recently visited Ireland and New York.

Visiting speakers

We also manage an extensive programme of visiting speakers and workshops to inspire learning and enable our students to extend their knowledge far beyond the curriculum.

Meet our students and chat to our outdoor learning and trips teams at an open event to find out more about what’s on offer beyond the classroom at GSAL.
