Sixth form students show little ones the ropes at Rose Court’s new trim trail

Tuesday 2 October 2012

There’s a new addition to the playground at Rose Court Nursery and Pre-Prep in Headingley, and a group of visiting sixth formers swung into action to show younger pupils how it should be done.

The students were visiting Rose Court, part of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), to celebrate the opening of the new trim trail, which will enable pupils from Years 1 and 2 to have fun and keep fit during their play times.

The new equipment has been installed thanks to the hard work of a dedicated group of parents who have been fundraising for the last two school years, selling tea towels, bags and Christmas cards, organising bun sales and holding two very successful spring balls.

Year 1 class teacher and outdoor environment coordinator Mrs Stephanie Munro coordinated the fundraising efforts. She said: “Our school council ‘Pupil Voice’ told us they would like a trim trail and it was the perfect solution for a linear patch of unused ground that we wanted to incorporate into the playground.”

“It’s been very popular and has lots of benefits for the children. As well as the exercise, they learn to take managed risks, interact appropriately with fellow pupils, take turns and be considerate. Pupils who complete the trail feel a great sense of achievement! We are extremely grateful to all those who supported our fundraising efforts and made the trim trail possible.”

Year 2 pupils can’t agree on which part of the trail they like best! Aidan Chahal said: “It’s brilliant. I like the end bit best because it’s a lot harder to get off the swinging log.” Zain Haroon said: “I like the first bit as you need a steady balance and I can play on it with my friends. It’s a good idea to put the soft surface underneath.”
