Sporting talent runs in the family for netball sisters

Monday 16 April 2012

Three sisters from Roundhay have helped The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) through one of its most successful netball seasons ever.

Molly, Rosie and Lucy Harris play for GSAL’s Under 11s, Under 14s and Under 16s respectively, and all three played in national finals during a single week in March, their teams having come through competitive regional heats.

GSAL’s U16 squad, with Lucy at goal attack, emerged victorious at England Netball’s National Schools Championships, being crowned U16 National Champions. Rosie and the U14s were also finalists in the England Netball competition, while Molly and the U11s played in the Independent Association of Prep Schools national finals a few days earlier.

Like many of their team mates, the sisters started playing netball in GSAL’s Junior School in year 4. Lucy and Rosie are already experienced county players, and have now been selected for their relevant age groups in the Netball Talent League, the youth squad of the netball super league, along with five of their GSAL team mates. Molly is looking to emulate her older sisters in the future, training hard with GSAL and at holiday camps out of term time.

In all, 29 of GSAL’s netballers play at regional or county level, a source of pride for Cath Johnson, GSAL’s head of netball. Mrs Johnson said, “We have enjoyed a superb season which has been the culmination of a lot of hard work and a team effort from the girls, their coaches and parents.”

“We have benefited greatly this year from our partnership with the University of Leeds, enabling the girls to train with former England player Alex Kirk and step up to the challenge of matches with older students.”

The girls have come a long way since first having a go at netball in GSAL Junior School. Lucy said, “Mrs Johnson originally got me into netball at age 9 and has supported me through the entire system, helping me to get into the city and county squads. The training camps in the holidays have also brought on my game a lot, and now I am happy to be giving something back by coaching Molly’s year group on these courses.”
