A team of aspiring entrepreneurs from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has tasted victory in a student competition to create and brand a new healthy snack product.

The five year 10 girls won the Great British Snack Off, an enterprise competition for students run as part of the EntrepreneurLive! 2015 event in Manchester. Run by e-learning resources publisher Tutor2u, EntrepreneurLive! provides an opportunity for business students to listen to, engage with and pitch to some of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs.

The team of Georgia Turton, Olivia Sellers, Laura Memmott, Abi Holmes and Emma Hope put their heads together to devise a new snack product for the competition.

Their brief was to come up with a new healthy packaged snack, including the company name, key ingredients and flavourings, a suitable snack description and product name, before pitching their big idea to a panel of entrepreneurs, including Matt Roberts of Bean2Bed, Simon Lyons of Version 22, Cally Russell of Mallzee and Josh Cook of Zeven Media.

Their ‘Snack Pops’ brand and the product ‘Chick Pops’, chilli flavour roasted chickpeas in a handy ‘on the go’ container impressed the panel and was declared the winning product.

Georgia said: “The pitch was scary – it was OK while we were talking about our brief but they also asked us some on the spot questions. We worked well as a team and all contributed.”

Emma said: “The whole event gave us a good insight into the challenges of becoming an entrepreneur. It was an enjoyable day, full of inventive and inspirational ideas and we learnt a lot about business.”

EntrepreneurLive! is aimed at students studying business at GCSE, A-level, or on vocational courses, which makes the team’s win all the more impressive – they only started their GCSE business course this September and were the youngest team in the competition.
