Twin delight and clean sweeps on GCSE results day

Thursday 20 August 2020

As the wait for GCSE results ended, uncertainty turned to smiles at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) where students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate despite the challenges of the past few months.

There was double joy for five families, as five sets of twins in Year 11 celebrated 99 GCSEs between them, with 85 at the top grades of 7 or above.

Across the year group, there was a clean sweep of top grades for more than half (56 per cent) of students who achieved the coveted 7, 8 or 9 in every subject. Among them are 43 students who scooped grades 8 or 9 in at least 10 subjects. Eight students secured the top grade of 9 in all 10 of their GCSEs.

Over half (54 per cent) of all grades were at 8 and 9, with 33 per cent at the highly sought-after grade 9. Overall, every grade was at 4 or above, a 100 percent pass rate.

Principal Sue Woodroofe said: “This has been a tremendously difficult year for students, families and school staff, following the abrupt end of face-to-face schooling and the restrictions of lockdown.

“Our students were disappointed to lose the opportunity to sit their examinations; however we are pleased that the assessment process has recognised their consistent hard work in senior school. Teaching staff followed Ofqual’s guidance diligently to produce a fair outcome for every student, through honest and accurate centre assessment grades.

“I am extremely proud of our GCSE students, and very appreciative of their parents and school staff who have tirelessly supported students through this very challenging period. I am hugely looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school in September.”
