Workshop facilitator

Anoara Mughal

Name of Workshop

Metacognition and Self-regulated Learning

Who is it for

This session is suitable for all phases.

Brief synopsis of workshop:

Metacognition is often described as ‘thinking about thinking,’ and it is not always obvious how it links to teaching practice. Metacognition is the internal dialogue which changes our behaviour to achieve our goals. Metacognition is not only the bridge between self-concept and self-efficacy but it is also the bridge between knowledge and critical thinking and it is the critical thinking which develops long term memory.

The aims of the session are to explore meaningful concepts taken from research and to develop a coherent understanding of what metacognition and self-regulated learning are. When taught explicitly, however, metacognitive strategies can greatly enhance learning for all pupils in all subject areas, helping to close the disadvantage gap.

The aims of this session are to develop a coherent understanding of what metacognition and self-regulated learning is, to explore how metacognition links to teaching practice and to explore ways to teach it explicitly.

What you will get out of it:

Delegates will leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of what metacognition and self-regulated Learning are and with a range of evidence-based metacognitive strategies, which can be implemented into classroom practice straight away.
