Brief synopsis of workshop: This session will cover an honest account of the challenges of being a new headteacher in an inner-city school and the challenges presented to senior leaders and educators whilst navigating the waters of the education sector in 2023! This informal session will give aspiring senior leaders or aspiring headteachers a clear insight into some of the challenges that await them. Through real-life examples, Danny will discuss overcoming and managing change, driving the right culture and the challenges that arrive on a day-to-day basis – all prerequisites of being a senior leader in education today. The session’s key takeaways will be setting the scene for driving change, building the strategy to do so, and the importance of bringing people with you. This workshop will by no means provide a one size fits all answer, but rather an honest review of approaches being taken, the lessons learned and most importantly, knowing there are many more lessons to come! What you will get out of it: A real account of what stepping into headship is like An honest and open discussion of the trials and tribulations of headship The current challenges facing school leaders today Approaches you can take when managing change, working on culture and strategy Profile of facilitator: Danny Bullock is Principal at Leeds East Academy, having initially joined the academy Trust in 2013 through the Teach First programme as an ICT Teacher. Danny worked his way into a pastoral leadership role in the academy’s Middle Leadership Team and quickly progressed onto the Senior Leadership team as Assistant Principal for Inclusion. Through this time, Danny implemented many new initiatives and systems to support Pupil Premium strategies, students with Special Educational Needs and launched the Additional Needs Team, including new online systems, provisions and ways of working. In 2019, Danny moved to Leeds East Academy as Vice Principal for Quality of Education. In that time Danny led significant overhauls in Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching & Learning as well as overseeing the implementation of the COVID-19 response. In addition to academy work, Danny has completed the Teaching Leaders Fellows programme, SSAT Leadership Programme and the NPQH (National Professional Qualification in Headship). Danny is a visiting fellow and assessor on the NPQ programmes and is currently delivering the NPQLBC.
