Brief synopsis of workshop:
MathsCity is the home of hands on maths in Leeds. Hands on activities use different reasoning skills. They allow groups of people to work on a problem and discuss it.
In this session we’ll look at informal and learner led mathematics. Starting with problems solving we’ll look how pupils can move to asking their own maths questions and learning to be curious.
What you will get out of it:
An insight into informal maths learning outside the classroom. A set of resources for maths enrichment.
Profile of facilitator:
Dr Katie Chicot, is the CEO of MathsWorldUK whose aim is to create the UK’s first Mathematics Discovery Centre. As part of this journey, in Oct 2021, the charity established MathsCity, a hands-on maths centre in Trinity Leeds shopping centre.
Alongside this Katie is a Senior Lecturer, Staff tutor in Mathematics and Statistics at the Open University. This involves working with students, tutors and creating materials. Both roles involve mathematics outreach including co-creating the series Patterns of life for the Open University’s YouTube channel, captaining the OU’s team on BBC2’s Beat the Brain, and co-creation of maths apps Perplex and Code Break.
