Name of Workshop
School to University – the journey for students with support needs
Who is it for
Staff who support students who have been identified as having ‘special educational needs’ or ‘additional needs’, or have a long term medical or mental health condition.
Brief synopsis of workshop:
The journey to university begins a long time before a student arrives on campus. There are processes which students would benefit from following as soon as they apply for university, even if they do not know which one they will ultimately go to.
The support available for students with a disability, including things such as dyslexia, will be different to what they may have had in school. The language used can also be very different meaning it can be difficult for students to navigate the processes.
In this session I will explain some of the terminology used, the support available and processes that it would be beneficial for students, and the staff supporting them to be aware of.
What you will get out of it:
Increase their awareness of disability, feel more confident in supporting students with the transition to university.
