2022 – Dr Jo Castelino – how to motivate underachieving students
Teaching and Learning Leeds Conference 2023
- Session Choice #3
Workshop facilitator
Dr Jo Castelino
Name of Workshop
How to motivate underachieving students
Who is it for
Primary and secondary teachers
Brief synopsis of workshop:
How do you motivate students who regularly tell you they cannot do your subject? In this session, I will share the research behind motivation and how it is important to help students self-motivate.
I will focus most of my session on practical strategies I use based on the principles of cognitive science and Teach Like A Champion to make my explanations and instructions explicit, run consistent routines, and encourage belonging.
By doing this, I help my bottom set and underachieving students build confidence, work well independently, make connections between concepts, and not be afraid to participate through a strong Culture of Error.
What you will get out of it:
How to encourage students to motivate themselves so they develop confidence and actively participate in lessons.
