Teaching and Learning Leeds Conference 2023

  • Session Choice #5

Workshop facilitator

Stefano Pianigiani and Simona Gravina

Name of Workshop

A practical leap in the EPI classroom

Who is it for

Languages teachers

Brief synopsis of workshop:

Through this workshop the delegates will have a practical taste (with MWB and interactive games) of Dr. Gianfranco Conti E.P.I. (Extensive Processive Instruction) approach, embedded in a clear sequence of teaching strategies. This workshop favours flooding comprehensible input, organising content by communicative functions and related constructions, and a big focus on reading and listening as modelling. The aim of this workshop is to empower the delegates with linguistic tools useful for the implicit consolidation of new contents. Since, in a typical E.P.I. unit of work, aural and oral work play a huge role, Speaking and Listening activities will be the main focus.

What you will get out of it:

The delegates will get a clear and practical explanation on how the EPI approach is implemented in the classroom.

Profile of facilitator:

Stefano Pianigiani is currently teaching languages at Temple Moor High School in Leeds, England. He teaches Spanish, Italian and French being fluent in four languages and he is also learning others. In addition, he is an educator at Nuestra Escuela Leeds, the first supplementary Spanish school in Yorkshire. Stefano is a fervent creator of resources whose greatest passions are cooking and DIY. He has a wide cultural experience having studied and lived in Italy, Spain and England. He has recently completed his MA in Education at Leeds Trinity University reinforcing his knowledge and competence on how to arouse engagement adopting the communicative approach within the classroom. He is an enthusiastic educator who has fully embraced Dr Conti’s teaching from its origins. His academic interest has led him to becoming a governor at St. Nicholas Catholic Primary School.

Simona Gravina has taught for 15 years, in schools in Italy and the UK, both in state and independent settings. She lives in Glasgow, Scotland. She is fluent in three languages and gets by in a few more. Simona is, besides a teacher, a mum, a bookworm, a passionate traveller and a fitness enthusiast. In the last couple of years she has been testing and implementing E.P.I. in one of the top Independent schools in Scotland, St Aloysius’College, where she is currently Modern Languages Curriculum Leader in the Junior School.
