A triumphant debut for prize-winning young reviewer

The Senior School’s recent adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ received critical acclaim from an invited audience of primary school children, who rose enthusiastically to the challenge of writing their own reviews.

‘Love will tear us apart’ was a remixed version of Shakespeare’s famous tale of the star-crossed lovers. Based upon the Baz Luhrman film the modern music and staging brought the play alive and ensured its appeal to a younger audience.

Year 6 children from eight primary schools from Leeds and surrounding areas attended a special matinée performance and were invited to submit their reviews, with the prize of a Kindle on offer for the best one.

Luke Tweed, Year 6 pupil at Ghyll Royd School near Ilkley, wrote the winning review with great insight and an expressive turn of phrase, describing how “the music and actions fitted like a jigsaw”. GSAL Principal Mike Gibbons and governor John Woodward visited Ghyll Royd to present Luke with his prize during school assembly.

Luke said: “It was the first time I’ve written a review. I thought all the actors in the play were really good. I’ve seen the traditional Romeo and Juliet before which helped me to understand the story. It’s very exciting to win a Kindle as I’ll be able to read more things and read them anywhere!”

Mr Gibbons said: “We had over 25 entries and the standard was very high so Luke did very well. One of our Senior School English teachers judged the entries and chose Luke’s for its excellent content, use of vocabulary and overall structure.”
