Celebrations as 40% of students achieve top grades

Thursday 18 August 2022

The Class of 2022 are the first cohort to sit public exams for three years due to the pandemic, and they have done incredibly well, said Sue Woodroofe, Principal of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), as results were announced today (Thursday, August 18).

“Our Year 13 students were the first cohort to be caught up in the public exam disruption and they did not have the opportunity to sit their GCSEs in the normal way. Understandably, many were then nervous at sitting A-levels – but they showed real perseverance and responded very well, with the support from staff and their families,” said Mrs Woodroofe. “Despite the change and uncertainty over the past two and half years, I have been proud of the way our students have approached their studies, showing maturity and commitment yet all the time encouraging each other along the way.”

More than 80 (40%) students at GSAL achieved the top grades of three As or more, with nine students gaining 4 A*s and a further 19 achieving at least three A*s across the board.

  • 26 per cent of grades were at A*
  • 59 per cent of grades were at A*and A
  • 83 per cent of grades were at A*-B

Mrs Woodroofe added: “I’m delighted that our sixth formers have been able to conclude their schooling on a high with these wonderful results. Through lockdowns and disruption to learning, they have grown in confidence and resilience. They thoroughly deserve this moment and are well prepared for the next chapter in their lives.”
