School pupils from across West Yorkshire have put their maths skills to the test at the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Mathematical Circle held at the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL).

Run by the UKMT team based at the University of Leeds, the event at GSAL is one of only four Mathematical Circles in the UK designed specifically to enrich the learning experience of young mathematicians.

From cracking codes that incriminated Mary, Queen of Scots, through to the complexities of Pythagoras theorem, pupils were challenged to work in teams to solve mathematical problems posed by the academics leading each session.

Diana Boynova, Deputy Head of Mathematics at GSAL, said: “It’s a real honour to host the only event of this nature in the north of England. Over two days the most able year 10 pupils have a unique opportunity to further their mathematical skills and knowledge in a relaxed environment, while interacting with their peers.”

Secretary for the UKMT, Dr Alan Slomson, who is a former pupil of Leeds Grammar School, explained: “This is the second year running that we have organised Mathematical Circles in the UK and we are grateful to GSAL for its venue and to those teachers and academics who volunteered their time to present content outside the syllabus. It’s an opportunity for the brightest pupils to learn, be challenged and enjoy mathematics.”

The event at GSAL comes at a time when the DfE has announced funding to support 12 further Mathematical Circles in 2013-14 at the Institute of Education, opening up these events to an increasing number of state schools throughout the UK.

Year 10 pupil, Daniel Clarke from Tadcaster Grammar School, said: “It’s been great to come to GSAL and learn in a different environment to the classroom. For me, the geometry presentations really stood out, pushing our knowledge to the limits.”

35 pupils from 17 schools in the West Yorkshire area including GSAL attended the event, together with current and retired teachers and academics from local schools, the University of Leeds and Open University.
