Congratulations to nine Year 11 boys from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) who have been selected to pursue their prowess on the rugby union field at city, county and even national level.

Tom Gorman currently plays for Leeds Carnegie squad at U16 and U18 level, as well as Yorkshire U16. Tom was also invited to attend two England training camps, after excelling for North U16s in the Divisional Festival. He impressed the coaches sufficiently to be invited to a third training camp, from which he was selected for the England North squad.

Will Newett also plays for Leeds Carnegie U16 and U18, Yorkshire U16 and North U16. Fellow students Will Shepherd, Sam Ward and Simon Phillips are part of the Leeds Carnegie U16 and Yorkshire U16 squads. Jack London and Tom Megson both represent Leeds Carnegie U16 and Harrison Brown-Raw the Yorkshire U16 squad.

Gerard Ellis has been selected for the U18 England Maccabi representative side which will play in Israel next summer.

All of these students were part of the highly successful U15 squad who brought the Daily Mail RBS rugby union cup home to GSAL last season.

John Mackenzie, teacher in charge of rugby at GSAL, said: “The boys have all worked hard to gain their representative honours, which are thoroughly well-deserved. It is virtually unheard of for a school to have so many players in a county rugby squad, making their collective achievements all the more impressive.”
