GSAL rugby team take first nine a side Rugby League trophy

Friday 29 June 2012

Rugby players in Y10 of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) have cracked both codes, by adding a Rugby League crown to their tremendous Rugby Union successes in the 2011-12 season.

The squad have won the inaugural independent schools Rugby League 9s competition run by The Rugby Football League, which took place at West Park, Leeds, to round off a successful season in which they won the U15 Daily Mail Rugby Union Cup.

GSAL’s nine a side team defeated Bolton 40 – 8, Ardingly College 40 – 12 and Fulneck 52 – 0 to win through to the final against Silcoates who were also unbeaten. GSAL pressed on to win the final decisively 48 – 12.

PE teacher Phil Holmes said, “Having had a taste of Rugby League last year, winning the Leeds Schools Championship, our boys have relished the opportunity to play the League code again. They demonstrated their athletic qualities with an unbeaten tournament against some strong opposition. It is a fitting way for the players to end a formidable year and is due, again, to their team ethic, selfless work rate and belief.”

After the tournament, the team were taken to Headingley Stadium for a meal and presentation of the trophy. They enjoyed a tour of the stadium and watched the professional Rugby League 9s finals.
