Pupils from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) were among top Leeds athletes, including Olympic gold medallists Nicola Adams and Alistair Brownlee, who received awards at the Leeds Sports Awards ceremony, held in the Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road.
This is another accolade to reflect the excellence of sport at the school; GSAL was named as the Independent Sports School of the Year by ‘School Sport’ magazine in 2012.
Swimmer Sophie Taylor, lower sixth student, who attained three medals at the European Junior Championships, achieved the Young Sportswoman of the Year.
Diver Hannah Starling (pictured), of the upper sixth, who is part of the City of Leeds diving team that represented GB in the 2012 London Olympics, received the Junior National Team award in the Young Team/Club of the Year category with her fellow team members.
The school’s U16 netball squad, which won the England Netball National Schools championship in 2012, was highly commended in the same category.
Paul Morris, director of sports at GSAL, said, “I am so proud of all the achievements of our pupils. It was a fantastic evening and the girls received well-deserved awards for all their hard work. It is also a great reflection of the dedication of the staff and the coaches, who have supported the students on their way.”
