Creative upper sixth student Robert Brown has designs on a top prize after winning through to the national final of a competition for the best young engineers and scientists in the UK.

200 finalists, chosen from thousands of entrants across the UK, will showcase their projects at the final of the British Science Association’s National Science + Engineering Competition, to be held at the Big Bang Fair in March. Robert earned his place in the final at the Yorkshire and Humberside regional event in 2013, with his art deco inspired radio which won him the Apollo Creative Design Award and the Best Over 16 Product Design project.

Over 50 awards, including the ultimate prizes of UK Young Engineer or Scientist of the Year, are up for grabs at the final, to be held during the Big Bang Fair in March at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.

Robert built his art deco radio for his AS-level design technology project. He said: “The radio was a good way to combine my interests in both electronics and art deco style, by creating an old-fashioned looking working radio using modern materials including acrylic and aluminium.

“The brief for the final is to make the design more commercial so ‘Mark 2’ will be digital, creating a new challenge of reconciling the digital features with the art deco design.”
