The Department for Education (DfE) published the 2013 secondary school performance tables on 23 January which show GSAL ahead in the region by several key measures.

The tables are devised from a number of criteria relating to a school’s A-level and GCSE outcomes in 2013, and have been adjusted this year to include some new indicators that reflect a school’s intake, the progress of pupils through their school careers and the way A-level points are expressed.

In the Yorkshire and Humber region, GSAL leads the way among schools which have provided results for the English Baccalaureate, an indicator which measures GCSE performance in English, mathematics, science, a language and a humanities subject. 85% of GSAL pupils achieved six passes at Grades A* to C in these subjects, an increase of 6% on the 2012 figures.

At A-level GSAL students achieved the second highest outcomes in the Yorkshire and Humber region according to two key measures. 48% achieved AAB in the facilitating subjects identified by Russell Group universities as the best preparation for degree courses at top universities.

In addition GSAL students achieved average A/AS-level points of 925.4, an 8% increase on last year, and this year the performance tables introduce a new metric expressing the average points as a grade. GSAL scores B+ alongside three of the region’s other independent schools.

GSAL Principal Michael Gibbons said: “The latest performance tables demonstrate an extremely strong performance by GSAL across all criteria, for which our students and staff should be justly proud. It is especially pleasing that the new rigorous measures introduced by the DfE endorse the quality of our students’ academic achievements.”
